Emotional regression is very often a missing tool and information that the general public and many therapists and counsellors do not have because little has been taught or written regarding this important topic. With a working understanding of this concept, we can move from rage to the expression of anger appropriately and compassionately assertively.
Emotional Regression is the unintentional and unconscious return to our histories. It is the phenomenon where one minute we feel like an adult and the next minute, due to some trigger, we feel small or little and less than powerful. Emotional regression happens when we are triggered and in defense, we automatically leave our neo-cortex or “new brain” and descend into our limbic brain or “old brain” that is only capable of three things—fight, flight, or freeze. For many, regression happens far too often and the individual and even the therapist may not know the causes. By working with emotional regression, we can reduce many destructive behaviors like going numb, creating walls of silence, expressing anger inappropriately, walking out, miscommunicating, misunderstanding, overreacting, under reacting, and much more.
