Introduction to the Physics of Angels

Today, we’re diving into a fascinating discussion on the intersection of science and spirituality. I am here with Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, who, along with myself, co-authored The Physics of Angels. Rupert is one of the few scientists brave enough to explore the realm of angels, and he has profound insights to share.

Welcome, Rupert! It’s great to have you here.

The Intersection of Quantum Physics and Angelology

Let’s jump right in. One of the most exciting contributions you make is linking Thomas Aquinas’ discussions on angels with today’s quantum physics. It’s astounding to think that if we substitute the word “quanta” for “angel” in many of Christ’s questions, we’re discussing concepts relevant to postmodern physics.

When Aquinas was contemplating how angels move, he had to consider their unique nature. He worked out how a nonphysical entity could operate in the physical world. Interestingly, he anticipated aspects of quantum theory, which is why the title The Physics of Angels fits our book so well.

Aquinas doesn’t delve into the cliché of how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, a notion fabricated by 19th-century critics. Instead, he questions whether two angels can occupy the same space simultaneously and how they can move.

In contemporary quantum physics, a photon of light acts as a unit—it’s either there or it’s not. You can’t have half a photon, and similarly, angels are quantized. They exist in whole units and act collectively. Aquinas argued that two angels can’t be in the same place at the same time, similar to how two photons can’t occupy the same space in exactly the same way.

Angels and the Natural World

My primary interest in this subject isn’t merely the parallels between angels and quantum physics, but rather the idea that angels interact with the natural world. Aquinas believed that angels play a role in the ordering of nature. If we accept that our world is alive and ordered by intelligence, it raises questions about how nonhuman intelligences interact with it.

The Story of Darwin and Wallace

Moving on, let’s discuss another intriguing insight: the story of Darwin and Wallace. Many know Darwin, but few are familiar with Alfred Russel Wallace, who co-discovered the principle of evolution through natural selection.

Wallace was a remarkable field naturalist who developed his theories while working in the Dutch East Indies. He believed that the creativity behind evolution required intelligence beyond mere animal capability, which he identified with angels.

The Resistance to New Ideas

Wallace faced considerable resistance for his views, especially his belief in angels guiding the evolutionary process. He thought that creativity in nature is inherent and needs guiding intelligences, rather than a singular divine intervention.

Unfortunately, he was overshadowed by Darwin and largely ignored by the scientific community, not only for his angelic theories but also for his views on human consciousness and spirituality.

Modern Perspectives on Angels

Turning to the present, scientists often keep their spiritual beliefs private, fearing backlash. Interestingly, there are many scientists who are religious or spiritual, yet this is rarely discussed openly.

Our book invites questions about how evolution and the angel tradition can inform our understanding of the universe’s ongoing creativity. For example, how do we comprehend the consciousness of celestial bodies? Can the understanding of celestial intelligences aid in interpreting natural phenomena?

The Role of Psychedelics in Spirituality

Another fascinating development is the growing interest in psychedelics. Many people report encounters with spiritual beings, including angels, during psychedelic experiences. This has led to a resurgence of interest in the spiritual dimensions of these substances.

In many cultures, angels are integral to spiritual practices. For instance, the Brazilian Santo Daime church incorporates angels into their cosmology, emphasizing direct experiences with these beings.

Celebrating Angels

As we wrap up, it’s important to recognize that the traditions around the world celebrate angels, especially during events like Michaelmas. I personally enjoy attending services where angels are honored, such as those at Westminster Abbey. It’s uplifting to see communities come together to celebrate these beings.

Thank you, Rupert, for your insights. Our exploration of angels continues to evolve, and the questions raised by our research are truly exciting.
