Diane Musho Hamilton—What is Enlightenment?

What is enlightenment?
According to Diane Musho Hamilton, Zen teacher, enlightenment is “the awakening to the reality that you aren’t fundamentally separate and your identification as a limited separate self is just one tiny minuscule perspective of what is.” Elaborating on this thought, she says “enlightenment is the recognition that your nature is nothing other than all things.” She notes however, that there are different kinds of enlightenment, explaining that the Buddha’s enlightenment is both different and similar to someone’s enlightenment today, because there’s an “unchanging and changing aspect to enlightenment.” This is why, Hamilton says, “it makes a little sense when we see enlightened people that are fundamentally homophobic, because you can be enlightened in different ways.”
